Balancing Act: Entrepreneurs Juggling Work and Kids During School Breaks and Beyond Part 2

Across the UK, average childcare costs range from £3000 to £8000 per year! Many parents start their own businesses to work from home and greatly reduce this expenditure. If you are one of them, then celebrate this successHow about profit? Although the Yell survey discovered that parents often have a lower day rate than non-parents, overall, the annual profit of a parent business was in fact 18% higher than a company owned by a non-parent. Success indeed!  Another reason for some parents is time. The time we spend with loved ones is priceless. Alexis Kingsbury, founder of Parentpreneur Accelerator summed this up by explaining that “With parentpreneurs, it doesn’t need to become a billion-dollar enterprise [but] a good income, financial freedom and ability to spend time with family” can be your definition of success. But you may be wondering, how can we count time factors as a success when 63% of parent business owners work 7 days a weekEven just being in the same room as your child is a bonus. Our kids watch us and learn life skills that cannot be taught in a classroom. After school, but especially during the school holidays, you have the amazing opportunity to mould their precious minds into the business brains of the future!

Don’t wait for your kids to go to bed before you get stuck into your admin. When you organise your finances, use this opportunity to explain the importance of handling money sensibly. Explain to them how you pay your bills. Show them how happy you feel when you work hard and are paid by your customers. You can explain that your food, electricity and even their toys are paid for because of your hard work When you calmly deal with difficult customers, you teach your child the art of communication. Keep your workspace neat and organised. Before you know it, your little one will be ‘playing office’ and following your lead while you get on with work. Spending quality time together is unique to each family. Some families have two parents, and both can teach the value of chores and secular work. What about single-parent families? Can a single-parent have a successful business?

There are just under 2 million single parents with young children in the UK. 90% of these are women. One of the many inspirational single mums out there is Jules Hawkins. She found herself and her young daughter below the poverty line and with bailiffs knocking at their door. Read her astounding story of destitution to entrepreneurship If you would like to join our free Start Your Own Business Programme, you will have the chance to meet other parents on a similar journey as yourself. If you would like to meet up with other businessowning parents in person, check out https://www.meetup.com/parents-in-business/  They host events all over London. What about networking with your kids? Non-parent business owners may shudder at the thought of mixing kids with business. Faye Dicker, freelance mum and digital hub founder, begs to differ. She arranges networking meetings, walks and public speaker events. Parents bring their children along, with no need to apologise. Find out more here https://www.freelancemum.co.uk/ and join other parents with their children as you expand your network and grow your business!

In conclusion, having children can be the spark that sets your business flame alight. Let our young ones look up to us as we carve beautiful futures for ourselves and our families. Whether you are a single parent or have a larger family, you can become the entrepreneur of your dreams. You can provide for yourself and spend time with your loved ones. The summer holidays are a chance to teach your children important life-skills. Time will fly and your young child will soon be a young adult. Who knows, they may even join our free Start Your Own Business Programme! In the meantime, check out this government advice. Here you will discover extra support for young entrepreneurs.

As always, Visionnaires and Capital City College Group are here to support you and wish you nothing but success!

Balancing Act: Entrepreneurs Juggling Work and Kids During School Breaks and Beyond Part 1

Finally, British Summertime is here! While this is fab news for our kids and their teachers, this can be a daunting time for us ‘Parentpreneurs.’ This month’s Two-Part Special Summer Edition of Visionnaires’ blog will give you a confidence boost. You do not need to put your business on hold while the kids are off school or wait for the kids to grow up before starting a business. Let’s show you how!

Some people think that business and children absolutely do not mix. Actually, having children can spark the motivation to change our lives for the sake of our families. The sudden shift in focus and huge responsibility can be the boost we need to start our own businesses In fact, the results of a 2016 Yell survey may surprise you. Yell revealed that “small business owning parents make 18% more annual profit than non-parents”. So, how can this be done?

Firstly, ask for advice! According to a survey of more than 1,200 firms conducted by the 2023 UK StartUp Awards and Starling Bank, people whose parents are entrepreneurs, are more likely to become entrepreneurs themselves. This is not only an incentive to set an inspiring example for your children, but statistically, there will be someone in your life that you can turn to for free advice. Think about it, do you have a parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt, neighbour, friend, or acquaintance you can turn to? Ask them the following questions: 1) What inspired you to pursue your entrepreneurial dreams? 2) Did you have children before or after you started your own business? 3) How did this impact your business journey? 4) What do you wish you had known then? 5) What would you change? 5) How did you balance family life with business life? 6) How did you cope with financial worries? 7) What happened to your business during the school holidays? 8) What are the pros and cons of working from home versus outside premises while being a parent? 9) Has being a business owner affected the career choices of their children? 10) How has your family benefited from you being a business owner? Ask as many people as possible and make the most of this free advice.

We aren’t going to lie. Running a business is tiring. Running a business while parenting is exhausting! According to the Yell Small Business Survey of 2016, 81% of parents work on the weekends and 63% work 7 days a week. We need to face reality. It is hard to keep to business hours’ when we own the business! The same survey revealed that 53% checked their emails throughout the evening and 32% checked them even while on holiday 14% never take breaks. But it’s not all bad news. Being a parent helps us to view success and contentment in a more balanced way. 79% of parent business owners class their businesses as successful while just 67% of the non-parents do. As parents, how should we measure our business success?

Look out for part 2! In it, we will share how to measure the true success of your business and how to pass your skills on to the next generation.

THE BIG SIX – Turn These Six Barriers into Hurdles!

Barrier No. 1

“I have an idea, but where do I start? I think I’m just not cut out for this. I’m not like other people who can start their own businesses”.

This is a common barrier. Most of us have felt this way. Turn this barrier into a hurdle that you can jump over by attending our free course, Start Your Own Business.  We’ll help you to build your confidence as you turn your idea into a business plan.

You can also take advantage of free support and advice from your local authority.

If you live in East London and you are struggling to find a quiet place to work or process your thoughts, speak to the staff at the Barking Enterprise Centre. Click here if you live in the South East. Use this link for the rest of London and the UK.

Barrier No. 2

“I need money to start a business. I am barely surviving financially as it is. Businesses are for people with extra cash or rich parents. Not people like me!”

This is a common misconception. Try not to let a lack of funds put you off. Turn this barrier into a hurdle by  taking extra notes during the financial section of the Start Your Own Business course.

You can also watch this recording by David Mark as he tells us how he grew an award-winning business without the initial funds.

You can also contact your local authority and find advice you can trust.  If you live in Southwest London click here for government backed advice. Click here for government backed financial advice for various areas in the UK. Here is a trusted  list you can work through.

Barrier No. 3

“I’m just too young. Business owners are older people. I will wait until I am older”.

There is never the perfect time to start a business, so don’t delay or you could miss out on the adventure of a lifetime! You can join the Start Your Own Business programme as soon as you turn 19! Watch this amazing Visionnaires recording. You will meet Phoebe Shergold Willis. At aged just 18 and while at university, she started her own business. You too can jump over this barrier by turning it into a hurdle! The government recommends contacting the The Prince’s Trust if you are aged 18-30 and would like to start your own business. Enterprise Steps also host events enjoyed by many young people who would like to work for themselves.

Barrier No. 4

“I didn’t attend university. I’m not clever enough to start a business of my own”.

Not all business owners have degrees. If attending university was a necessity, there would be a worldwide business shortage!  Communities would struggle to survive. So, it turns out that this isn’t a barrier after all! Join the Start Your Own Business course. You do not need any previous qualifications. Ask for some business and education advice from The Prince’s Trust if you are aged 18-30. The government also recommends Jumpstart if you need to attend workshops. The Open University also has hundreds of free business courses to choose from. It’s never too late to learn. Jump over this hurdle and start your own business!

Barrier No. 5

“I already have a business, but I don’t know how to market it or scale up”

We understand that this is a barrier, and that is why we are here. Visonnaires will give you the guidance you need during the marketing section of the Start Your Own Business program. Follow us on social media, attend our masterclasses and learn how to grow your business.  Your local authority may offer workshops through Jumpstart. Click here to find out more about the government backed Kick Off In Business program. They also give you guidance on marketing.

Barrier No. 6

“English isn’t my first language. I wasn’t even born here. I could start a business ‘back home’, but it will be too hard to start one here”.

This feeling is sadly too common. The truth is this is a barrier that only exists in our minds. We can root it out and turn it into a hurdle that we can jump over. Within Capital City College Group and Visionnaires is an amazingly wide variety of nationalities. We were not all born in the UK, and we do not all consider English to be our mother tongue. When you join the Start Your Own Business program, you will see that we represent so many races. nationality or gender is not a restriction. If you can speak more than one language, then you are an entrepreneur with a superpower! If you were not born in England but have travelled and made a new life here, then you have developed essential qualities like resilience and bravery. Qualities that all business owners need to succeed.

View the government website to find out about business support that you are entitled to.

With our support, you will not face your barriers alone. We will help you to turn them into hurdles that you can jump over. You are not alone, and we see the amazing potential in each one of you!

Self-care tips for new business owners

Self-care for new small business owners.

Self-care isn’t a luxury exclusively for people running big businesses – it’s an absolute necessity for every business owner.  If you’re new to running a business it’s so easy to forget the little things you can do to avoid burn-out and being over-whelmed.  Here’s our top five self-care tips so that you can make sure you’re showing yourself a bit of love as well as your business!

  1. Connect with others.  If you’re running a business yourself it can feel like you never see anyone.  Try to get to a few events, talk to your customers, network with other small business owners.  Make sure you get regular human connection! Try your local council, Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses and Eventbrite for free events in your area.

  2. Set boundaries for yourself.  Perhaps you can set your working hours and make sure to stick to those at least three times a week, then gradually work up to five?  Learn how to say no, it’s not easy and which business owner in their right mind says no to anything right?  Well sometimes it can make all the difference if you’re heading for burn out so think carefully before you say yes.

  3. Celebrate achievements – no really, really celebrate!  We can dwell for ages on the things that are not going well but even the most amazing things can happen and we skip right over them.  Take time every day to note down what went well, however small. Getting the admin out of the way anyone? 😊

  4. This is such an obvious one but take regular breaks.  Hands up everyone who’s got to 4pm and realised they’d forgotten to have lunch?!  Build in time for short bursts of exercise, mindfulness, water, snacks – whatever your body needs during the day.  Your brain will thank you for it.

  5. Continuously teach yourself new things but do ask for help when you need it. It‘s easy to think you have to do everything yourself and should just learn right?  Well sometimes you have to the consider the cost of someone else doing it versus the number of hours you’ll have to put in to get the job done.  Do you know your own hourly rate?!

Go Fly Entrepreneurs!

Did you know that start-ups create 40% of all new jobs and lead recovery from recessions*? However, one of the leading factors as to why start-ups fail is personal doubt and fear.

I have recently had the privilege to work with my eldest daughter in taking her small business SASA, to the next level by developing their brand and positioning in the market. This foundational work had never been done previously, she of course has been concentrating on the practicalities of running a small business, which is often just pure survival.

As we took time to step back and dig into the foundations of SASA, its unique value, purpose and ethos, the obvious became very clear. She was its uniqueness, her passion, her humanity, her ethos was SASA. Our challenge was to package that up succinctly and to serve it to the tribe she cares about, so that SASA can make a difference to the community, to the world.

This is a lot of pressure on one human being! As an entrepreneur with a career portfolio she had to work hard on herself over the years to build resilience and confidence, never giving in to self-doubt and fear.

If you too are an entrepreneur you may recognise this pressure yourself. You will always care more about your product or service than anyone else, you are so entwinned with your business, that you are your business. This can be a very lonely place to be, so how can you build confidence and remain courageous?

  1. Does walking into a networking event fill you with dread? You must have heard the term ‘fake it til you make it ‘…….well try it. Be an actor, exude confidence until it starts to come naturally. Dress confidently, in a way that makes you feel at your best, stand tall, breath in and walk that catwalk! Believe me, it will become easier the more you do it.
  2. Do you have that annoying chimp on your shoulder, your inner saboteur? You know the one, always telling you that you can’t do this, your product is rubbish, you’re just a fraud and a fake! You need to minimise him or her. Create a name for it, have a conversation with it if, but tell it where to get off, recognise it and dismiss it. One sure way of doing this is to surround yourself with positive people, their noise will squash that gremlin and give you wings to fly.
  3. Does failure cut too deep? Do you find it difficult to bounce back? Success is good, but failure is better. Embrace it, learn from it and come back stronger. The reality is that you need to get used it —– you are going to fail a lot, but in each failure is enormous opportunity. Failure doesn’t mean that your product or service is not good, you just need to do something differently. The more you fail, the more you learn.
  4. Are you proud of your elevator pitch? Or do you find it a little cringy? If so, go back to the drawing board and create something you are extremely proud of. But make it shorter, sexier, and clearer. Make sure your passion is conveyed, it is spoken from the heart and you believe in every last syllable. Make it authentic and congruent with who you are. Script it, practice it, practice it, practice it and believe it.
  5. Do you often feel out of your depth and that you’re winging it? This is good, embrace this feeling, get used it, because if you are operating just outside your comfort zone, you are moving forward and developing. If you’re feeling safe, you are standing still.
  6. Five second of courage can change everything. Read Mel Robbins Five Second Rule. She argues that you only have 5 seconds of pure instinct before your brain can close it down, therefore as soon as you have that thought, move – physically move and act on it. You can make positive, courageous change just one 5 second decision at a time. Developing this habit helps you to stop doubting, amazing things can be achieved when your instinct, goals and values are all aligned.
  7. Finally, sign up to Visionnaires.  They will offer you a world of support from business webinars, to networking events, to mentors. A supportive group of like-minded people are waiting to help make your business grow! Visionnaires recent impact report demonstrated that those who went through their programme increased their confidence 3 fold.

One final note to close on, as someone that has always struggled with self-doubt, being vulnerable is OK, people warm to a little self-deprecation. As long as you show up, regularly, consistently, again and again- you can make change happen.

Go Fly Entrepreneurs!

Written by Elvie-Jo Shergold, Marketing Expert and Visionnaires mentor

The first Visionnaires Showcase event

Visionnaires held its first showcase event to bring together, some of its alumni and mentors.  The theme of the event was confidence with some of our alumni pitching their businesses and the mentors providing them with constructive feedback.

First, we heard from Pablo Lloyd, cofounder of Visionnaires who gave us his thoughts on his own confidence and asked everyone if there was someone in the room who always felt confident no matter what the situation. Of course, the answer was no one!  We then had great engagement from the audience who shared their experiences of when they’ve felt confident and the things they do to help them feel more confident. All helpful stuff for our founders about to pitch their businesses!

We heard from Hamzika of start-up Donaa, who’s founder, Anas, did the Visionnaires program in 2020. He couldn’t be at the showcase event as he’s fundraising in Silicon Valley so Hamzika stood in and did a superb three minute pitch describing the error-free high value 3-D printing software business and plans for the future.

We heard from Kunwoo from Ideakoko who showed us his cooling products that uses NASA technology to help cool people and pets down in hot weather. He got some great feedback from the mentors who thought that it would make a great product for menopausal women all year round.

Marlena, Visionnaires alumni and our Coordinator also pitched her business which is a live/work property business in which she hopes to turn empty commercial properties into affordable, modern living and working spaces.

Finally, Sian showcased her art and jewellery and told us about her successful pop-up shop at London Made Up in Regent Street before Christmas.  Read our blog on her here.

All of our founders showed an amazing amount of confidence in successfully talking about their business and, most importantly, the help they’d like to get from our mentors.

The event ended with networking for the mentors and alumni, which resulted in lots of connections being made. offers of support and lots of connecting on LinkedIn!

We will be hosting these events quarterly so that our Visionnaires alumni can benefit from pitch practice and meeting with lots of our mentors.
